About Thanal and the concept of Zero Waste: "Thanal"[1] is a Non-Governmental Organization pioneering a new form of participatory
environmentalism in India. In creating "Zero Waste Kovalam" [2] , Thanal has successfully forged a partnership[3] between government, local
businesses, wastepickers, and Non- Governmental Organizations which simultaneously addresses
environmental issues, the need for livelihoods, regulatory needs, and
local economy.[4] This program has been so successful that the Kerala
state government has officially adopted it as the model for the entire
state's waste management system; and UNDP has partnered with Thanal to
train Zero Waste cadres throughout India through their new
initiative: 'Endogenous Tourism Culture and Craft-based Ecotourism for
Sustainable Livelihoods and Integrated Rural Development.' [5]
About the Speaker: Jayakumar Chelaton is the Executive Director of Thanal. Jayakumar is also a member of the Steering Committee of Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and is also
a leader of the "Waste Not Asia"[6] coalition, as well as several other
international networks on pesticides [7] and environmental health.
